Anadyr city is an administrative center of the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug and is situated on the bank of the Gulf of Anadyr (Bering Sea). The population of Anadyr and Tavayvaam Ethnic Village (being included in the city limits since 1993) amounts to 11,073 people with density of 573.27 persons per km².

History
Anadyr was founded on August 3, 1889 (July 22 in accordance with the old style) not far from a Chukotka settlement Ven (XVII century) by Glinevetsky L.F., then Head of Anadyr Okrug, and was meant to serve as a border and administrative outpost called Novo-Mariinsk. Then the future city consisted of one house and three yarangas – traditional dwellings of the Chukchee. On August 05, 1923 the village was renamed as Anadyr in memory of the Anadyr prison established by Cossacks-pioneers (Dezhnev S.I.) in the middle of XVII century.
In 1932 Anadyr village turned into the center of the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug set up in 1930. On January 12, 1965, it was granted status as a city.
Natural conditions
Over the recent 100 years the absolute temperature minimum stood at -51.1C, while the absolute maximum reached +28.2C. An annual amount of precipitations averaged to about 400 mm.
Anadyr as well as its neighborhoods are included into a shrubless tundra subzone. Vegetation is strongly influenced by the closely situated sea and severe monsoon winds. Among cultivated plants, which are able to grow under the conditions are several types of shrubs, an alder, a poplar and a willow.
Birds of Anadyr and neighboring tundra are represented by three species of gulls (a kittiwake, a silver and a glaucous gull) and a skua (a promarine skua and a long-tailed skua). It is possible to encounter an Arctic tern, several species of greybacks, a sparrow and a snow owl. Rookeries of Alyumka island not far from Anadyr are inhabited by a Phalасrасоrах pelagicus, a Fratercula corniculata, a Lunda cirrhata and a number of other bird species. Mammals of the region include an Alaskan ground squirrel, a Mustela erminea, a Mustela nivalis, a Alopex lagopus and other animals. Among water animals and fish are a Delphinapterus leucas, a seal, and several species of salmons, a smelt, a pike and a Siberian white salmon.
Production sector
The production sector is represented by actively developing branches of internal demand. Financial stability is sustained by gradual improvement of tax collectability indicators, financial target policies and support by the district budget.
The year 2005 saw a launch of a new branch of the energy industry on the territory of this municipal unit, gas industry. The 2005 output of GM heat-electric station amounted to 8.8 mln m³, accounting for 10.4 mln rubles in monetary terms.
The main food and agricultural producer of the city is the Chukotka Industrial Corporation JSC. Its products embrace about 87% of the market. The corporation also manufactures dairy products, eggs and poultry. In 2004 it commissioned a new productional complex engaged in meat processing and sausage making. The corporation is a gold prize-winner of Reindeer-Herders Congress in Yakutsk City and the International Fair in Khabarovsk City.
The 2005 total output of agricultural producers stood at 21.5 mln rubles in monetary terms in comparison with 19.7 mln rubles of 2004, including plant production amounting to 1.02 mln rubles.
Support of small business
Over 110 small businesses and 635 individual entrepreneurs, the equivalent to 17.2% of the city indicator, have been registered in the city. The total number of employees of small businesses is 1883 persons, accounting for 27% of the employable population.
The 2005 output of products and services of small businesses and individual entrepreneurs stood at 1880 mln rubles in monetary terms, amounting to 40% of the total production output (goods and services) of the city entrepreneurs and companies. The current system of registration and taxation of small businesses provides for quick incorporation of a company and low managerial costs.
In 2005 tax charges of small businesses were as high as 27.3 mln rubles. Municipal Administration has ensured that small businesses receive municipal orders via the system of municipal competitions. Its winners take part in the construction and repairing of administrative buildings, schools and ch facilities and etc. In 2005 by way of such competitions, small businesses received municipal orders amounting to the total of 190.9 mln rubles.
Transportation
Within the territory of the city passenger transportation services are rendered by municipal autocompany Avtotransportnik Severa LLC. Entrepreneurs are involved in the provision of taxi services. Cargo transportation is provided by UMS Chukotskoe, ICHP Temp, and Avtotransportnik Severa, while seasonal sea transportation is ensured by Anadyrmorport. The main objective of the transportation development is the evolvement of autoroads and traffic infrastructure.
The year 2004 witnessed a repair of roads totaling 1,455 m² on the following streets: Sovetskaya, Partizanskaya, Otka, and Stroiteley. The year 2005 saw the commissioning of concrete surface on the following streets: Polyarnaya, Mira, Rultytegina and Lenina. Reconstructed road surface amounted to 28,010 m² in 2005.
Urban amenities
The City Deputies Council has set a regulation providing for remittance of funds from the local budget, investments of companies, and various business legal structures, along with voluntary contributions of companies and private persons, for the development of Anadyr, capital of the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug.
In 2005 spendings on the construction, repair and maintenance of urban amenities stood at the level of 76.7 mln rubles. The implementation of a program “Anadyr-Chukotka Capital", funded by the local budget envisages creation of urban amenities, repair of facades and roof structures, and landscaping, and costs 54.1 mln rubles.
The 2005 municipal budget ensured overhaul and capital development amounting to 330.9 mln rubles in monetary terms. The year 2005 saw the beginning of capital reconstruction of a bridge across the Kazachka River along Polyarnaya Street. Most of the work had been completed in previous years, which allowed for commissioning of the project. In 2006 concrete is to be put, and the bridge extras (railing and illumination) should be finished.
In 2005 the State Commissioner endorsed 2 dwelling houses, a transformation substation serving a dwelling complex, an orphanage, buildings of the Ministry for Taxes and Charges, a trading complex "Wonderfield”, a cultural facility with an exhibition center (a museum center “Chukotka Heritage”), a memorial to landsmen diseased during WWII, a Cathedral of the Holy Life-giving Trinity and etc.
Following the reconstruction, the Chukotka District Library Building, a dormitory on Bering Street, a building of a psychoneurological clinic, and other projects were commissioned. Construction of a kindergarten, a temporary prison and the City Administration Building was commenced.
To prevent dustiness caused by intensive construction, repair works and to enhance environmental situation and appearances of Anadyr, landscaping works were performed in 2005. Over 200 local shrubs were planted along Otke and Energetikov Streets. Facilities for fertilization and mechanical processing of soil were purchased. Open earth and flowerbeds were planted together with “Ogonyok" asters, junipers and a white cedar at the central city square. All of these were brought from the “Continent.”
Sustainable and dynamic development of the city economics encourages revenues of the population. In 2005 revenues exceeded expenses by 177.8 mln rubles. The chief growth factor is higher salaries and social allowances (pensions and benefits).
Budgetary organizations of the city including kindergartens and schools are provided with a full volume of financing. The city does not have debts to companies and organizations. All payments are made in a timely manner.
