History
The Bering District influenced by the Beringovo Sea, situated near the district has the area of 37.9 thousand m². It was established in 1957. Population is 2,782 people. Bering, an urban-type village with the population of 1,711 persons is the administrative center. The Chukchee, an indigenous people, account for 40% of the total district population. The district includes three villages – centers of farms. One of them, Alcatraz is located not far from the Negron District Center and is linked to it with an unclassified autoroads, the other two, Meynypilygino and Khatyrka, are situated on the southern bank and are connected with sea transportation, winter snow road and helicopters. Upon minor reconstruction, airports of the two southern villages are able to serve middle-size aircrafts.

Natural conditions
The Bering District is located in the southernmost part of Chukotka; however, this is not to say that it is most advantageous in terms of natural conditions. Geologically, it is the newest part of Chukotka ground, which relatively recently was covered with waters of the Bering Sea. Earthquakes, outlets of warm springs and gases and bitumen occur here. Mineral resources structure, represented mainly by ignitable substances of sedimentary grounds--coal, oil and gas--is also unique. Mineral reserves including those of the shelf are extremely significant. Among useful metals are only platinoids in a far eastern sector of the district.

Production sector
Coal, energy production and food industry are main industrial branches. Trade and agriculture are underdeveloped. The district has a sea port. Gold production is totally absent. Economic indicators of the district development testify to the stable situation in 2005.
The leading place of the production sector has been taken by the coal industry. The year 2005 witnessed an event of great importance for the Nagornaya Mine JSC. By November of 2005 the Mine’s coal output had already reached targets of 100% plan. By the end of the year, the coal output had accounted for 116%, which was the equivalent to 290,000 tons exceeding the output of the pervious year by 88,600 tons. Users were supplied with 232,200 tons of coal totaling to 220 mln rubles in monetary terms. Supply contracts were fully implemented. In comparison with 2004 the supplies increased by 32,000 tons.
In 2005 local self-government authorities facilitated the launch of the construction of a new bakery and diary products plant. The commissioning is supposedly to take place in the first part of 2006. Currently in bakery production a municipal unitary enterprise in involved.
The Bering beer and nonalcoholic beverages plant. 2005 output stood at 80 tons of product. The actual product costs of sold products amounted to 3.5 mln rubles. Currently the plant is going through a bankruptcy procedure but it owns raw materials sufficient for production activities till the launch of a new plant.
Production of thermal and electric power as well as the provision of communal services is carried out by the Bering branch of a state company of the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug “Chukotkommunkhoz”. In 2005 electrical power output of the company stood at 28 mln kilowatt/hour including those produced by village diesel stations amounting to 4.7 mln kilowatt/hour. Electrical power supply accounted for 15.7 mln kilowatt/hour. In 2005 all works in the territory of the Bering District were provided by the upgraded housing and communal facilities costing 25.4 mln rubles.
In 2005 navigation period a Federal State Enterprise "Bering Sea Port" served 44 vessels exceeding the same indicator of the previous year by 8 vessels. The port processed 223,600 tons of cargo including 214,100 tons of power coal and 9,500 of general cargo. Port fleet supplied cargos to ports of Anadyr, Providenya, etc. The first freights were made to Natalia and Anastassiya inlets of the Koryak Autonomous Okrug.

Agriculture and consumer market
Two municipal enterprises, agricultural producers, Beringovskoe and Khatyrskoe are active in the district. An agricultural targeted program “Stabilization and development of the Bering District Agro-Industrial Complex” aiming to restart a traditional occupation, reindeer herding, has been approved. As of the end of 2005 reindeer population of Khatyrskoe stood at 2,700 animals. The 2006 plan envisages the increase of the reindeer population to 3,200 animals. Pig population of the Bering Livestock Enterprise stands at 87 animals, while that of egg-laying hens, over 1000 birds. In 2005 agricultural companies sold 13 tons of various fish, 3,500 tons of pork and over 74,000 of eggs. In monetary terms it amounted to 1.5 mln rubles.
Consumer market of the municipal unit may be described as having a constantly improving structure of the internal market and higher retail turnover. It may be explained by organizational and structural changes in district supplies. The market saturation and stable revenues of the population allow to forecast a further increase in the retail trade turnover. A café-bar "Navigator” and a facility for advanced fish processing have been recently opened in the Navigator Trade and Entertainment Center.

Infrastructure
The year 2005 saw important construction projects in national villages and a district center. Thirty-six single-family cottages, a complex of technical facilities including 106 buildings, engineer lines, water tank and sea berth were commissioned in Meynypilygino. An administrative building of a village hospital was capitally repaired. In 2005 enterprises of Beringovskaya Construction Company CJSC and AGis Vostok LLC reconstructed dwelling houses and prepared them for winter. The works amounting to 15 mln rubles in monetary terms were financed by a district budget. The current year witnessed the installation of a digital telephone station “Proton" of “Almaz” series and “Gudwin-Borodino" microcellular connection system in Khatyrka village. The same system was launched in Meynypilgyno village. The mentioned works provided for a new enhanced level of intervillage communications.

Social sphere
Currently the educational system of the Bering District is represented by 4 municipal educational institutions: Educational Centers for 416 schoolchildren and 97 preschool children and a municipal kindergarten “Rainbow” for 124 children. In 2003 a group of a training college No.3 of Anadyr city was open, its first graduation party took place in 2005. The graduates were trained as automechanics. In 2005 groups majoring in tailoring leather haberdashery goods were open in Alkatvaam village and those majoring in plant breeding in Khatyrka village.
Heath care system basically includes a branch of the Bering District hospital. It employs 23 doctors which amounts to 71% of the staff establishment. 52 persons of nursing staff are employed in compliance with established qualifying categories. The Bering District is the only among neighboring districts with all positions of senior physicians with divisional hospitals closed. A health care center of the district hospital is a head facility providing qualified outpatient care. Doctors of 11 medical professions receive patients and provide outpatient care on the basis of divisional hospitals.
