History
The Chaoun District (Chaoun-Chukotka) is situated in the north-east with an outlet to the East Siberian Sea (the coastal line of 580 km). The district with the area of 58,100 km² was established in 1930. The district borders with the Bilibin District in the west, the Shmidt District in the east and the Anadyrsky district in the south-east. As of early 2005 the district population amounted to 5,989 persons with the density of 0.15 persons per 1 km². Indigenous peoples stood at 1,014 persons. Pevek city is an administrative center with the population of 4,582 persons.
In all terms the district has always been among “first” Chukotka districts comprising the north bank, levels of the Chaun Bay and the namesake hollow surrounded with mountains.
Currently the district is among the most developed and populated ones. It was here that first Chukotka minefields of pewter and gold were found. Here their production was launched; first roads, power plants and lines were built.

Economics
Currently the district is one of the largest transportation hubs of the autonomous district. An airport of the Chaoun District is second by its size and serves airlines from Moscow, Magadan, Anadyr, Bratsk and of other Chukotka localities. A sea port Pevek - the largest Chukotka port - is a reloading point and a wintering area of coastal fleet.
Pevek hosts a hydrometeorological administration, a large car fleet and other auto and construction companies. Thus, Pevek is a significant transportation hub of great importance exceeding mere district and Chukotka needs.
The city has the Chaunskaya thermal power plant supplying the whole district, a construction materials works, a reconstruction works, a food plant and local enterprises with power via the system of power lines. The largest industrial companies of the Chaoun District include ПК a/c "Chukotka" and "Argon" CJSC.
Currently two agricultural companies “Chaunskoe” and “Chukotka” LLC are active in the territory of the district. As of January 01, 2006, all relevant companies’ population of cattle amounted to 59 animals including 31 cows. Due to the slaughter 2005 pig population decreased in comparison with 2004 and accounted for 214 animals. The Chaoun District has all grounds to turn into the most advanced Chukotka district with a unified metallurgical complex. To raise the efficiency of mineral and raw materials base use it is necessary to implement large-scaled works regarding the search and appraisal of gold fields and to estimate gold reserves in technogenic formations. 2005 gold output stood at 1,956,989 kg, while silver output amounted to 9,023,027.2 kg, accounting for 110.1% and 104.7% on the year respectively.

Social sphere
2004 saw the launch of the reconstruction of “Chukotka” cinema, which was supposed to be turned into “Iceberg” entertainment center. The total area of the building stands at 1002.86 m², the volume – 5,614 m³ with 144 seating places. The project was commissioned in April 2005. In order to provide efficient spending an open competition for the reconstruction of dwelling houses was announced in Pevek in 2005. A Chaunsky branch of “Chukotkommunkhoz” with the reconstruction of dwelling houses being its main activity became its winner.
Educational system of the district includes 8 educational institutions including 3 secondary schools (a school No.1 majoring in several subjects, an “Educational Center" of Pevek city and a school of Rytkuchi village), a school with a kindergarten of Yaranay village, a primary school-kindergarten of Ayon village, 2 preschool institutions (“Golden Key” of Pevek city and “Rucheek” of Rytkuchi village) and an institution of additional education of Pevek city. Regional programs ensured them with methodic literature, medicaments, sports and working facilities, computers and etc accounting for 3,974,883 rubles in monetary terms, which is 1.83 higher on the year.
