History
The Chukotsk District with the area of 30,700 km² was established in 1927. Its population amounts to 5,200 persons with the density of 0.2 persons per 1 km². Lavrentiya village with the population of 1,328 persons is its administrative center.
The indigenous peoples – the Chukchee and the Eskimo - account for 82% of the total district population. The Chukotsk District is an agricultural one with an absolute prevalence of indigenous villagers.
Lavrentiya village is the only Chukotka district center of agricultural nature, which is socially and demographically closer to a traditional lifestyle rather than to an industrial one. The village has evolved from a cultural camp situated on the bank of the namesake bay; it has an airport, local enterprises, a hospital and other services. Vessels reloading is carried out inshore, as the bay is not convenient for a sea berth. However, theoretically, Lavrentiya has the potential of becoming a center of connections with the USA, like Provideniya village. The distance to the Nome and Kotzebu is much shorter than from Provideniya village.
Social sphere and construction of dwelling houses
2004-2005 period has sustained positive trends, seen in the recent three years, in the social and economic situation of the district, namely, a drastic rise of goods turnover, an increase in services volume, higher salaries and pensions in all economic branches, the stabilization of demographics and better living conditions.
The recent five years witnessed a positive dynamics of the natural population increase. 2005 indicators were 3.5 higher than in 2001. 2005 birthrate rose by 15% in comparison with 2001.
Commissioning of dwelling houses stood at 2.4 m² per capita. During the period from 2003 to February 2006 inclusively, 116 dwelling houses with the total area of 28,906 m² was built with 105 of them of 7,488 m² area being one-family houses.
The recent five years witnessed the reconstruction of boiler houses and diesel stations in almost all villages of the district. The Administration of the autonomous district decided to make use of geothermal springs of the Chukotsk District for thermal supplies of a native village Lorino. The spring’s capacity allows meeting the village’s demand of thermal power standing at 2.5 gigocalories/hour. The design was implemented by an Ireland company “Kamhnit LTD”.
2005 saw the launch of the capital reconstruction, provided for by the budget of the autonomous district, of the social sphere buildings, a berth in a district center, façades and roofs of 6 multi-storey houses in Lavrentiya and Neshkan villages.
Higher monthly salaries and other revenues ensured better living conditions of the population. 2004 monthly salary averaged to 9,600 rubles, while in 2005 it became 1.25 times higher.
Agriculture
District economy is represented with agricultural companies. National craftworks as well as bone-cutting activities have also been developed.
Industrial production is absolutely absent. Further plans of the district are associated with the development of reindeer breeding, fisheries and seal fisheries.
A targeted support of agricultural companies has been underway. Within the frameworks of an annual targeted regional program, reindeer-breeders, sea hunters and other farmers have been provided with material incentives. 2004 agro-industrial output stands at 5 mln rubles, while 2005 it amounts to 6.8 mln rubles. 2005 reindeer population increase 1.21 times higher on the year.
