Internal sectors of the district have no permanent population and are used as reindeer pastures. Vrangel island is a reservation area and can not be used in economic activities.
Economics
The main economic activity is gold product. The district agro-industrial complex is represented by two companies.
Further plans of the district are associated with higher gold output. To achieve it, it is necessary to intensify the processing of ore fields and to carry out the appraisal of technogenic reserves. Power supplies for the future normal functioning of mining companies should reach 5 megawatt. Meeting of these demands will ensure the development of diesel stations and mini-thermal power plants using local coal.
Investment attractiveness of the district is expected to be raised by a program for the autoroads development.
Currently three gold-producing companies are active on the territory of the Shmidt District. The 2005 gold output stood at 1,625 kg.
