Coal-mining industry of the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug has demonstrated a stable growth of coal production during five previous years. In 2005 local coal-mining plants produced 634.1 thousand tons of coal. This is 29,000 tons (or 20.8%) more than in 2004.Such level of output totally satisfies the needs of main coal consumers in the Okrug , Chukotenergo Ltd. and Chukotkommunkhoz Co., and allows to make seasonal supplies to native settlements and export it outside Chukotka, in Koryakia and Kamchatka, in particular.
Presently two coal mines are exploited:
1Bukhta Ugolnaya: recoverable coal of À+Â+Ñ1+Ñ2 category reserve of 402,7 million tons,
2Anadyrskoye: recoverable brown coal reserve of 233 million tons.
The Anadyrskoye Mine is owned by Ugolnaya Mine Ltd. Its rated annual output is 340,000 tons.
The production level has been constantly growing. Thus from 254,000 tons in 2000 it increased to 342,400 tons in 2005. It is projected that in 2006 the output will reach 355,000 tons.

The Bukhta Ugolnaya Mine is exploited by Nagornaya Mine Ltd. The greater part of the output is high-quality semi-coking coal. The rated annual output is 200,000 tons. The output has increased from 72,6000 tons in 2000 to 269,000 in 2005.
Coal production dynamics of the Nagornaya Mine (in thousand tons)

In 2005 the Nagornaya Mine supplied 128,000 tons of coal to the Koryak Autonomous area and the Kamchatka Okrug. This proves economic profitability of coal production and marketing even in geographical and climate conditions of the Chukotka Okrug.
Limited access to sea ports hinders marketing of the finish product; as a result the company faces a necessity to attract investments for infrastructure development.
