Chukotka's airports are joined by main line connections with Moscow, Khabarovsk, Omsk, and Magadan, and by local airlines with region centers and national villages.
In 1996, on the basis of several former large air enterprises of Chukotka, the Federal State Unitary Enterprise "ChukotAvia" was formed. It owns 10 airports including the main one in Anadyr, and two airports of federal importance in Anadyr and Pevel. Anadyr and Providenie Airports have the status of international airports.
In 2005, the implementation of the biggest development project on Anadyr airport was completed. The air terminal and the runway were reconstructed, and service infrastructure was improved. A new air terminal, the flying control office building, and new radio and meteorological equipment were put into operation.
The Government of the Autonomous Okrug is working on the problem of rebuilding old landing grounds and locating new ones in national villages and settlements fitting them with necessary equipment in order to provide flights of AN-2 and AN-3 airplanes. They are solving the issues connected with safety in the first place. Four light-signal systems have been bought one of which has already been set in Lavrentiya airport. This year they will set these systems in the airports of Zaliv Kresta, Provideniya and Pevek.
In 2002, Anadyr airport was officially announced a reserve airport for flying along international airlines from Magadan to Anchorage and back. Servicing international flights between Anadyr and Anchorage and Anadyr and Nome is planned to start. Due to the measures of reconstruction of Anadyr airport, now its landing and take-off characteristics allow for its servicing of all known aircraft.
For a number of regions, air transport is the only way of communication. With the purpose of social support of the citizens, starting June, 2001, the Government of the Chukotskiy Autonomous Okrug decided to introduce subsidies for local airline flights.
