The maritime transport scheme of Chukotka includes 5 seaports located on its territory: the port of Pevek in the East Siberian Sea, and ports of Provideniya, Egvekinot, Anadyr, and Beringovsky in the Bering Sea.
Chukotka's sea ports do not have their own middle or large-tonnage fleet; their main task is processing cargos delivered by vessels of steamship lines of two directions: the West direction (from Arkhangelsk, Murmansk and St. Petersburg) and the East direction (from Vladivostok, Nakhodka, Vanino, Magadan, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and ports on Sakhalin). At the same time the East direction is the main one, which is connected with ice conditions of navigation in the Eastern Arctic.
Navigation periods last: from July till October in Pevek; from July till November in Provideniya; from July till the beginning and the middle of October in Beringovsky and Egvekinot respectively, and from July till October in Anadyr. The port of Provideniya can be used all year round, if vessel pilotage is supported with icebreakers.
Successful navigation during the last five years is due to the stabilization of the general social and economic situation, which in its turn made it possible to timely prepay the enterprises of the sea transport for the execution of necessary works connected with the repairs of the necessary facilities and equipment in pre-navigation periods.
Total cargo circulation of Chukotka's ports for the last 5 years has increased by more than 30%. 231 sea vessels and 735 thousand tons of miscellaneous cargo was processed at the sea ports in 2005.
