System of education

By 2000 the critical wear and tear of school buildings as well as other problems had excluded the possibilities for the development and expansion of the educational system of Chukotka. The year 2001 saw the construction of a first complex "school-kindergarten" in Nutepelmen village (Yioultin District). Starting from then the Chukotka autonomous government has been involved in the building of a new educational system.

Over 2001-2005 period there have been:
  • constructed – 18,
  • capitally reconstructed – 18,
  • repaired – 10 buildings of schools, boarding schools, kindergartens and educational centers.
Totally they account for 52% of the educational institutions of the Autonomous Okrug.
The budget spending on necessary equipment and facilities amounted to 126.08 mln rubles.
As of 2005 the following preschool institutions, primary and secondary schools have been active in the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug:
  • 20 kindergartens,
  • 11 primary schools,
  • 14 schools,
  • 23 secondary schools,
  • 1 special (a corrective) school,
  • 10 boarding schools,
  • 13 educational centers,
  • 2 orphanages.
The institutions of primary specialized education were represented by:
  • 1 evening school,
  • 3 training colleges.
In the sphere of the secondary and higher professional education the following institutions are active:
  • 1 institution of the secondary special education (a college),
  • 3 branches of higher education institutions.
Supplemental education is provided by:
  • 3 sports schools for the children and youth,
  • 1 palace,
  • 1 house of the children art
  • 3 seasonal recreational camps,
  • 4 centers of supplemental children education.
In the period of 2001-2005, within a program "Concept of Modernization of Russian Education for 2001-2010)", the support of the professional education received a priority status in terms of Russia and was financed from the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug.

The year 2005 saw the strengthening of the material and technical base of primary professional education institutions, which was provided for by the Chukotka government, amounting to 3.28 mln rubles in monetary terms. Social support of teachers stood at 1.28 mln rubles.
The recent five years witnessed the opening of 28 groups of primary professional education in 17 populated localities. Indigenous peoples received opportunities to learn traditional craftworks (deer herding, seal fisheries and bone-cutting art) at a qualitatively new level.

The Chukotka Polytechnic College is the only multi-field educational institution of Chukotka. It was established in 2003 through the uniting of the Anadyr Pedagogical College of Northern Peoples, the Anadyr Medical College, the Chukotka National College of Arts and the Anadyr Branch of the St. Petersburg Industrial and Economic College.

College students have been provided with:
  • a student campus including 6 buildings
  • a capitally reconstructed 2 dormitory buildings of the former pedagogical college
  • 35 teachers invited from central Russian regions (accounting for 35.6% of the total teachers number).
The more efficient structure of secondary special education institutions ensured more students: 407 persons – in 2001, and 560 persons – in 2005.
Autonomous budget spendings on the system of secondary professional education amounted to 124.25 mln rubles in comparison with 42.81 mln rubles in 2001.
