Celebration of the Fawn

This holiday is celebrated in late August in settlements of the Anadyr and Yiоultin Districts, and takes place at the end of the summer herding, fawn slaughter and deer skin stocking for later make of shoes and clothes.
The celebration starts with the arrival of the herder who tells every one of the approaching herds. He is invited to the hearth, given something to drink and he begins telling the news from the summer pastures. Summer tents, both heavy women ones and lighter types are erected, and sleds laden with the branches of tundra bushes are drawn around.

In a yaranga an additional pole is thrust through the smoke-hole, to which a long belt with both ends hanging to the floor is attached. Many tambourines (yarars) are tied to the belt. A yaranga stays half open and everything which may interfere with movement is removed inside it.

Those who take part in the celebration dress up and attach tufts of dog hair to their clothes. It is traditionally believed that the dog fetches luck because the dog brought to the sacrificial altar hasw magical powers. On the day of the celebration men and women put on special headbands made of hide stripes, with two sealskin strips hanging down from the band at the forehead (symbolizing «antlers»), to which tufts of dog fur are also attached.

“Meeting the herd” ritual traditionally involved men and boys and women forming two separate rows, all facing the fawn herd. Women would start the fire on a fire-board, and when they heard "Ok!" they threw embers in the direction of the herd. This protected the the fawns from misfortune. Men would shoot the arrows.

As the celebration goes the returning herders are met with ceremony, fires are started with the help of a traditional fireboard, and elements of the Thanksgiving Ritual are performed. A stew made from a fawn’s head is erected and figures depicting deer made from grass and fat are displayed on wooden plates standing nearby. A boy starts the ritual. He wears a deer lasso on his shoulder and brandishes a small spear-like knife, imitating the slaughter of the deer. Young girls come up, take the dishes with food and treat the participants to it.

Often sports competitions take place during the celebration, such as spear and lasso throwing, pulling straps and poles, running with poles, long-jumping, etc.
