Science

General characteristics

Science in Chukotka is mainly represented by organizations of the Far East Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The only independent scientific establishment, which has the status of an institute, is the scientific research centre Chukotka located in Anadyr.
The Center carries out research in the field of ecology, geobotanics, ichthyology, geology, geochemistry, cryopedology, economics, medico-ecological problems, and national pedagogics. It includes eight laboratories, and being well-equipped it organizes joint field research activities together with the scientists from the Far Eastern region and central regions of Russia.
A large amount of research work is undertaken by «Vrangel Island» reserve — mostly in the sphere of zoology of large mammals, ornithology and botany, and by Pevetskiy hydrometeorological center.
The Far East Department of the Russian Academy of Sciences (http//:www.febras.ru) is represented in Chukotka by the Nature Department of the Pacific Institute of Geography and by separate laboratories (radiocosmophysics lab in Cape Schmidt village, ecology lab in Anadyr) and by some research groups).
A large part of scientific research on the territory of Chukotka is still carried out through expeditions using the potential of institutes of the central parts of Russia and of the Far East. Regional particularities, mostly social problems of the North, are studied in the Okrug by some institutional branches of various Russian academies, those of medical, pedagogical and agricultural sciences. Application scientific research are also conducted by a number of small research groups of institutional branches — in the sphere of oceanology, maritime transport, etc.
In the last couple of years links have been established in a number of international programs with scientists from the USA, Japan, France, Sweden. Their joint expeditions are organized have been Chukotka.

Beringiya Days

Within the framework of the Berengiya Days, international scientific conferences are held on the both sides of the Bering Channel. Annual conferences are held one after another in Anadyr (Russia), Ancourage (USA) and focus on various aspects of study of cultural, nature, achraeological and geological resources of the old Beringiya.
Beringiya Days are aided by the administration of Chukotka Autonomous Okrug and National Park Service of the United States of America. First Beringiya Days were initiated by the National Park Service of the USA and held in Ancourage in November, 1997. As a result of their collective work, the parties founded the Internation Park of Beringiya Heritage. An agreement on the establishment of such a park was reached in 1990 during the official visit of the USSR president Michael Gorbachev to the United States. The ground for this was a Soviet-American agreement on cooperation in the sphere of environmental protection. This unique project concerns geological interests of Russia and the USA in the area of the Pacific and neighbouring regions of Arctic and is connected with issues of keeping cultural and nature heritage as well as with problem of existing of aborigen peoples along the Bering Channel.
