Healthcare system overview

Life conditions in Chukotka are very severe, consider the following: the temperature of -55 C (-67 F), strong winds, long polar nights, and considerable season sun radiation fluctuations.

A part of the population lives in hardly accessible remote villages dependant on the transportation, which is at times unpredictable. Transfer of the sick from deer-breeding brigades and national villages is done solely by the sanitary aviation.

Official medical statistics uses relative indices expressed in cases per 1 thousand people. Due to the low density of population and emigration processes leading to its reduction, Chukotka is a zone of statistic anomaly. Despite the fact that absolute indices show that death rate in the Okrug dropped in 2004, relative indices suggest that the rate rose. Clinical examination of the citizens helped diagnosing ailments, which in its turn positively influenced illness rate statistics. When considering the state of the healthcare system of the Okrug, it is important to bear in mind the statistical paradox of small figures.

Provision of the population with GPs in 2005accounted for 88.9 and 127.7 medical staff per 10 thousand people. At the same time, the number of pediatricians in Chukotka is bigger than the average rate for the Russian Federation: 36.4 doctors per 10 thousand people, whereas the average rate for the country is 19.7. In 2005, 20,852 patients received medical treatment in the permanent medical-prophylactic institutions of Chukotka. 20,892 residents of the Okrug have the right for privilege medication on prescription.

In 2005 the delivery of medicine to Chukotka was estimated at 80.867 million rubles, 4 million of which were given by the Okrug budget and spent on purchasing vitamin and mineral additives. Compare: in 2001 49.629 million rubles were spent of medication and 1.023 million rubles were spent on spring and autumn vitamin additions for the citizens.
