History
The Providensk District was established in 1957. Before that the Providensky, the Chukotsky and the largest part of the Yioultin Districts were united into the Chukotsky uezd. In 1957 its southern part got the status of the Providensk District with the area of 26,800 km². Its population stands at 4,505 persons with the density of 0.16 persons per 1 km². Provideniya village with the population of 2,732 persons is its administrative center. The population is chiefly represented by the indigenous people – the Chukchee accounting for 55% of the total district population.
The eastern part of Chukotka rich with animals and with the mild climate has always been the most populated district with greatly developed traditional culture and lifestyle. Small-scaled populated localities situated 20-30 km from each other has been involved in offshore operations along the whole bank.
A village of the urban type Provideniya is the largest populated locality of Chukotka eastwards from Anadyr. It was set up in 1930th as a main port of the eastern end of the Northern Sea Route. Provideniya village is located on the bank of the Komsomolskaya bay – a branch of Provideniya bay, which represents a deep-water fiord not far from winter limits of ice fields extremely convenient for port necessities.
In 1940th-50th Provideniya village, as the only one having a real port, mechanical workshops and multi-story houses, a power plant and a telephone, played a significant role as a center of civilization of the Eastern Chukotka. Currently Provideniya village is the center of international contacts of Chukotka, in summers receiving aircraft from Alaska (mainly from the Nome). Provideniya airport is located on the other bank of the bay in Ureliki village.
Agriculture
Agriculture represents the main part of the Providensk District economics (the reindeer population amounted to 1,202 animals as of April 01, 2002). The district also has a food plant, a transportation complex, a domestic airport and a sea port of Chukotka. The port serves any vessels and can be expanded. In addition, the village has a shipyard, a training college on reindeer breeding, a power plant and various local enterprises. Traditional craftworks have also been developed here.
Further district plans are closely associated with the development of seal fisheries and reindeer breeding. In order to stabilize the economics of the district it is necessary to significantly reconstruct the food plant, to strengthen material and technical base of the agro-industrial complex and to increase the reindeer population, which is supposed to create a material base for local industries.
The reindeer population is gradually rising, In comparison with the previous year, the increase stood at 14 animals. The total district reindeer population amounts to 1,216 animals. The meat output rose by 171.9 centners.
2002 saw the sales of sea animals standing at 1,473 centners, which is 170% (862 centners) higher on the year. 2002 fish output accounted for 48 centners with caviar output reaching 1.44 centners in comparison with 108 centners or 44% in 2001.
