The peculiarity of the transport infrastructure of Chukotka is the absence of railways. In the early 1990s, the most part of freight in the Okrug was moved by sea and air transport; freight delivery by surface transport comprised about 10% of the total freight bulk. A sharp growth of air charges and the short navigation season moved freight by motor transport to the first place. A prevailing part of the freight handled in ports is delivered to the consumer by roads and winter roads.
As of the 1st of January, 2005, the length of territorial roads was almost 5000 km, including:

- 1271 km of winter roads with extended exploitation time and the lowest quality covering;
- 3095.7 km of winter roads.
